Aside from the obvious — when you’re hungry as hell you want to quit the diet and eat food — research has also supported this extremely obvious fact about calorie- restricted diets: there is a direct, positive correlation between how much you restrict your diet and how poorly it works. The more you reduce your calories the lower the chance you’ll stick to it. No kidding. When you’re on a diet that leaves you hungry you want to eat. Thank you science. Now how about for those extremely rare individuals who manage to suck it up, be miserable, snap at their spouses, and make it through an 8 or 1. The vast majority of these people end up triggering something known as the “rebound effect” where the body has adapted to a lower baseline caloric load and has been altered sufficiently that when you throw the “normal” level of calories at it, it often goes back to the pre- diet levels plus some. Rebounding = you gain back the weight + even more. What you need to know: A) Dramatically calorie- restricted diets suck big time and are no fun — which means you probably won’t adhere to them (All diets suck without adherence, remember?), and; B) If you actually do adhere to one, you’re likely to trigger a rebound effect where you’ll gain all of the weight back, plus some. They don’t work. So what does? How in the hell can I lose some weight if I’m not supposed to starve myself like an emaciated Victoria’s Secret model? Many Problems Associated With Eating Too Little Food. There are several problems associated with dramatically reducing how much you eat: Loss of muscle mass – When your body isn’t given enough energy to survive, it will start drawing energy from your muscles because they are calorically expensive to maintain. One of the main reasons we get fatter as we age is due to the decrease in muscle mass and associated hormones. Loss of testosterone – Muscle mass is important for keeping fat mass levels lower. Testerone levels decrease with caloric restriction, making it much harder to maintain muscle mass. Decreased leptin levels, and low energy – Leptin is one of those hormones that helps signal to your brain that you’re full/hungry. Low leptin levels register as “I’m hungry!” . Also, low energy sets in with low calorie intake, because the body is trying to limit exertion. But it’s nice knowing the science confirms this . But the real meal on the left will leave you full for several hours, while the junk food on the right barely lets your stomach register that it has eaten. My premise? Rather than dramatically reducing your calories (skipping breakfast, lunch, etc), when you eat the right food, you’ll also be eating the proper amount of calories. I don’t get it, am I really supposed to starve myself, be grouchy as hell, and force myself to go to the gym 5 days a week? If that’s what dieting takes, maybe I don’t want it. Some snakes, such as the Asian vine snake (genus Ahaetulla), have binocular vision, with both eyes capable of focusing on the same point. Most snakes focus by moving the lens back and forth in relation to the retina, while in the other amniote groups, the lens is stretched. Many nocturnal snakes have slit pupils while diurnal snakes have round pupils. Skin. The skin of a snake is covered in scales. Contrary to the popular notion of snakes being slimy because of possible confusion of snakes with worms, snakeskin has a smooth, dry texture. Most snakes use specialized belly scales to travel, gripping surfaces. The body scales may be smooth, keeled, or granular. The eyelids of a snake are transparent . In the case of snakes, the complete outer layer of skin is shed in one layer. Scales are named mainly according to their positions on the body. Their eyes are always open, and for sleeping, the retina can be closed or the face buried among the folds of the body. Molting. A snake shedding its skin. Molting, or ecdysis, serves a number of functions. Firstly, the old and worn skin is replaced; secondly, it helps get rid of parasites such as mites and ticks. Renewal of the skin by moulting is supposed to allow growth in some animals such as insects; however, this has been disputed in the case of snakes. Before a molt, the snake stops eating and often hides or moves to a safe place. Just before shedding, the skin becomes dull and dry looking and the eyes become cloudy or blue- colored. The inner surface of the old skin liquefies. This causes the old skin to separate from the new skin beneath it. After a few days, the eyes clear and the snake . The old skin breaks near the mouth and the snake wriggles out, aided by rubbing against rough surfaces. In many cases, the cast skin peels backward over the body from head to tail in one piece, like pulling a sock off inside- out. A new, larger, brighter layer of skin has formed underneath. But a younger snake, still growing, may shed up to four times a year. This periodic renewal has led to the snake being a symbol of healing and medicine, as pictured in the Rod of Asclepius. A probe is inserted into the cloaca until it can go no further. The probe is marked at the point where it stops, removed, and compared to the subcaudal depth by laying it alongside the scales. The left and right sides of the lower jaw are joined only by a flexible ligament at the anterior tips, allowing them to separate widely, while the posterior end of the lower jaw bones articulate with a quadrate bone, allowing further mobility. The bones of the mandible and quadrate bones can also pick up ground borne vibrations. The jaw- quadrate- stapes pathway is capable of detecting vibrations on the angstrom scale, despite the absence of an outer ear and the ossicle mechanism of impedance matching used in other vertebrates to receive vibrations from the air. The Western hognose snake is a harmless, diurnal North American colubrid that has grown in popularity in collections around the globe. Its natural range extends from southern Canada through the central U. S., including Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, into northern Mexico. This is a “peach” specimen. Dorsally, the Western hognose has a ground color of tan, brown, gray or olive, with darker, somewhat square blotches or bars, or rows of parallel spots that run longitudinally along the body. Ventrally, the Western hognose has glossy black scales, often interspersed with white, yellow or orange. Added to this is the Western hognose’s ability to compress, or flatten, its body when threatened (this might be an attempt on the snake’s part to appear larger and more dangerous to would- be predators). Often while in hissing mode, a Western hognose will also flatten out the ribs along its neck, or “hood” like a cobra. This bluff is most impressive with mature animals; in younger snakes it’s quite amusing. When a Western hognose does strike, it hits the predator with its heavily keeled snout, but does not bite. The snake rolls over onto its back, with mouth agape and lolling tongue. When flipped upright by hand, it will resume its death feign by rolling back onto its back, which can be quite amusing to witness. This death act is also sometimes accompanied with the Western hognose squirting a foul- smelling musk from anal glands located on either side of the cloaca (not as amusing to witness). I have worked with the Western hognose for many years, and it is my absolute favorite snake to keep and work with. Males are somewhat smaller, averaging between 1. A plastic, 5- gallon terrarium with a secure lid is ideal for a hatchling. These are inexpensive and widely available at most pet stores that sell reptile supplies. An adult Western hognose can be kept in a 2. The Western hognose is a ground- dwelling species, so opt for an enclosure with a greater amount of floor space; height is not as important. I normally use three different sizes: 5- liter boxes for established hatchlings, 3. Shoe and sweater boxes should have ample ventilation, especially in more humid regions, which can be achieved by drilling holes into them. While it is not the most aesthetically pleasing, it is inexpensive, inhibits the growth of bacteria and eliminates the threat of a hatchling ingesting substrate that could cause an abdominal impaction. It is easy to clean, allows the snakes to burrow, and, unlike cedar and pine, it is not hazardous to a snake’s respiratory system. Also popular, and generally safe, are recycled newspaper products that make cleaning up after the snakes easy. They also absorb odors fairly well and allow the snakes to burrow, which is important to hognoses, especially younger snakes. Some keepers prefer to feed their snakes in a separate enclosure or receptacle to prevent their possibly ingesting substrate. There are a range of full- spectrum lighting products available at local pet retail outlets that will fulfill the requirements of your Western hognose. One of these can be used to provide a hot spot basking area maintained at about 9. Fahrenheit for your Western hognose. Be sure to get an appropriately sized heater to allow for a heat gradient—you don’t want it to heat more than one- third of the enclosure, so the snake can get away from the heat if desired—and never use medical heat pads found in pharmacies. While these may be adjustable, they can be potential fire hazards, or overheat the enclosure. Hot rocks are also to be avoided. The cooler end of the enclosure can be maintained in the high 7. In a rack set- up, heat tape and a programmable thermostat or rheostat combination is most commonly used to provide heat. These can be purchased from reptile specialty stores or online. Heat tape is normally affixed to the shelving the enclosure sits on or in, and is a very good and easily manageable method for heating the enclosures in a rack. For these reasons, it’s best to use tongs, forceps or hemostats when feeding Western hognoses. Once it has been swallowed it should produce a noticeable lump, but not one that is so large that it is still noticeable 2. In the wild, Western hognoses consume a variety of prey items, including small rodents, lizards, amphibians and the eggs of ground- nesting animals. Pets do very well on a diet of pre- killed or frozen/thawed mice. Many Western hognose keepers prefer frozen/thawed rodents because they are easier for the snake to digest; at the cellular level, the food item has been broken down by about half. Also, as with pre- killed mice, the risk of your Western hognose being injured by a live mouse is eliminated. Responsible breeders will not offer Western hognoses for sale unless they are established feeders. It is best to feed babies with small hemostats so you can better manipulate the prey item, and use it to draw the attention of the baby hognose. Most babies will readily accept as their first meal a thawed pinky mouse dipped in warm water (and it’s interesting to watch a young hognose drink the water dripping off the mouse just before it begins eating it). Repeating this a few times during the first several meals will result in a young Western hognose becoming an established feeder that looks forward to mealtime. Scenting a thawed pinky mouse with canned tuna or salmon juice is easy and may encourage these snakes to eat. It usually gets good results, and it’s easy to wean the snakes off this form of scenting in a very short time. Sometimes “braining” a pinky works well, too, although this is not for the squeamish. It involves making a small pinhole in the skull of a frozen/thawed pinky, and squeezing a bit of brain matter out to smear on the mouse’s nose. Using toads can introduce dangerous parasites to the snake, and it can also be difficult to wean small Western hognoses off toad- scented mice. Finding toads throughout the year can present problems, too. Change the water and wash the water bowl at least every week, and more often if the snake fouls the water. While individuals may exhibit spectacular bluffing displays as mentioned previously, these are not signs of aggression. Do not bother a snake that is exhibiting bluffing behavior, so as not to cause it undue stress. Wait until the snake has calmed down, and then handle it. Some snakes will gently take food off hemostats, or they may prefer having food left in a quiet corner of the enclosure to eat at their leisure. Others will emerge from their enclosures ready for food with mouths open. No matter which type of behavior your animal displays, use hemostats, tongs or forceps to reduce the chance of an accidental bite. If a bite occurs, do not force the snake off by yanking on it, which could damage its jaws. Instead, pour a small capful of mint mouthwash onto the area the snake is biting. This is harmless to the snake and will result in it releasing its bite. Sometimes a hognose bite may lead to mild swelling at and around the bite site. This is best remedied by cleaning the location of the bite with soap and water and taking Benedryl within an hour after a bite occurs. It produces a proto- lipase enzyme cocktail in its saliva (as nearly all life forms do) that many herpetological authorities believe is used to help break down food. When someone uses the term “venomous,” they are referring not only to the type of enzyme cocktail injected into a victim, but also the system used in the delivery of venom. The Western hognose has a very primitive and inefficient delivery system, and its oral secretions (saliva) are harmless to humans. Talk to your provider if you're experiencing other side effects – if you're not anemic and your prenatal vitamin has more than 3. If you are anemic, you may be able to prevent stomach problems by starting with a supplement that has less iron and gradually building up to the dose you need. You could also try taking the iron in smaller doses throughout the day. Your provider may suggest trying different iron supplements to find one that's easy on your stomach. For example, some moms- to- be have fewer side effects from a timed- release iron supplement, although the trade- off is that the iron isn't absorbed as well this way. Finally, don't worry if your stools look darker when you start taking iron. That's a normal and harmless side effect. Diet for Anemia - Diet. Anemia is a condition in which the blood does not have enough red blood cells or enough hemoglobin – the iron- containing, oxygen- carrying protein molecules found in the red blood cells. One cause of anemia is iron deficiency. Because anemia can be life- threatening, it must be treated. In many cases, an iron- rich diet is sufficient to resolve the condition. Causes. It can result from any of the following factors. Heredity. Infection. Blood loss following a surgical procedure. Alcoholism. External bleeding in women due to heavy menstrual periods. Pregnancy. Chronic diseases which disable red blood cell production. Lack of consumption of iron- rich food sources due to strict dieting or poverty. Signs and Symptoms. Anemia often presents as fatigue and listlessness and can develop into more serious symptoms – up to and including heart failure. Some of the symptoms of anemia include: Headache. Weakness. Tiredness. Fatigue. Dizziness. Confusion. Pale skin. Shortness of breath. Chest pain. Prevention. Prevent anemia by eating a healthy diet that includes a variety of iron- rich foods and reducing or eliminating your intake of alcohol. Treatment. Your individual treatment plan should be determined with your doctor and will be unique to you and your situation. Your treatment may include: Dietary changes. Lifestyle changes. A low FODMAP diet, or FODMAP elimination diet, refers to a temporary eating pattern that has a very low amount of food compounds called FODMAPs. The acronym (as described by co- creator Sue Shepard) stands for: Fermentable – meaning they are broken down (fermented) by bacteria in the large bowel. Oligosaccharides – “oligo” means “few” and “saccharide” means sugar. These molecules are made up of individual sugars joined together in a chain. Disaccharides – “di” means two. This is a double sugar molecule. Monosaccharides – “mono” means single. This is a single sugar molecule. And Polyols – these are sugar alcohols (however, they don’t lead to intoxication!)Let’s stick with the term FODMAPs shall we? Those saccharides and polyols are short- chain carbohydrates that, if poorly digested, ferment in the lower part of your large intestine (bowel). This fermentation process draws in water and produces carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and/or methane gas that causes the intestine to stretch and expand. Its primary use is to relieve digestion- related symptoms, but is emerging as a useful treatment tool for several other conditions too.
It can be useful for those with: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)- more on that below. Other forms of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorder (FGID)Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)Certain auto- immune conditions/diseases like (potentially) rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis or eczema. Fibromyalgia or other health issues you’ve noticed are triggered by certain foods. Frequent migraines that appear to be triggered after certain meals. The best candidates for trialling a low FODMAP diet also tend to answer yes to these questions. And note that it’s not to be confused with a low Histamine Diet or a low Salicylate diet. Summary: FODMAPS are short- chain carbohydrates that, if poorly digested, ferment in the bowel to cause severe digestive stress. A low FODMAP diet is designed to temporarily restrict the amount of FODMAPs consumed and is useful for treating conditions like IBS. Common FODMAPS and what to look for on the label. Common FODMAPs in your food include: Fructose: A sugar found in most fruits and vegetables. Lactose: A sugar found in dairy foods like milk. Fructans: Very similar to fructose, found in many vegetables and grains. Galactans: Found primarily in legumes. Polyols: Sugar alcohols like xylitol, sorbitol, maltitol and mannitol. You find them mainly in artificial sweeteners and chewing gum. Best practice is to read the ingredients label for other added FODMAP ingredients such as inulin (chicory root), natural flavors, high fructose corn syrup, agave, honey, etc. What about gluten? While gluten can also trigger food sensitivities in a handful of people, it is a protein, not a carbohydrate. Therefore gluten cannot be classified as a FODMAP. However, gluten- free products do still appear beneficial for those with FODMAP sensitivities. Testing from Australia’s Monash University shows that gluten- free products almost always have reduced amounts of fructans and oligosaccharides. That means gluten- free products are generally lower in FODMAPs, and free of gluten of course. Summary: FODMAPs exist mainly in dairy, legumes, and many fruits and vegetables. While gluten is not technically a FODMAP, gluten- free products are typically lower in FODMAPs anyway. A low FODMAP diet is very restrictive and designed to be temporary. Before we go any further, it’s important to clarify that following a low FODMAP diet is very restrictive and cuts out numerous common foods and food groups. That means you need to reintroduce foods at some stage, so it cannot be a permanent solution. The idea is that restricting all FODMAPs at once should have a far greater and more consistent effect than simply restricting one FODMAP in isolation. With all FODMAPs out of your diet, it gives your gut bacteria a chance to correct any imbalances, and your gut some time to heal. How it works. For 3- 8 weeks (depends on how you respond) you strictly limit or exclude all FODMAPs from your diet. This is known as the elimination phase. A period shorter than 3 weeks can occasionally be used if you’ve undergone hydrogen breath testing to identify which specific FODMAPs are the most problematic. But otherwise it’s likely you will require at least 3 weeks for the body to adjust and . For example, you may first reintroduce fructose (a type of sugar) for one week. If you have no symptoms, you may then reintroduce lactose too, and so on. Once the trigger FODMAPs have been identified, you will know what you can and cannot eat. So it’s basically a specialised form of elimination or exclusion diet. Summary: A low FODMAP diet is not designed to be permanent. It is highly restrictive for several weeks, before foods are slowly reintroduced to determine what causes symptoms. IBS and studies that support a low FODMAP diet. Much of the research has been on patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder characterised by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits, and around two thirds of IBS patients report their symptoms are related to food. It’s now estimated to affect 1. Australia and up to a whopping 2. US and UK (2, 3). The highest quality evidence to date was a 2. Australian clinical trial that compared the effects of a low FODMAP diet between 3. IBS patients and 8 similar individuals without IBS (to act as a control group for comparison). Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a diet low in FODMAPs (less than 3 grams per day) or a typical Australian diet for 2. This was followed by a long “washout period”, before crossing over to the alternate diet for another 2. IBS symptoms were reduced by 5. FODMAP diet, with the greatest improvements observed one week after implementing the diet. More specifically, improvements were seen for bloating, abdominal pain, wind and dissatisfaction with stool consistency. Numerous similar studies (albeit not as well designed) have found very similar benefits, and the overall average success rate is about 6. Research in this area still has a way to go, but scientific consensus is that a low FODMAP diet should be the first dietary approach for treatment of recurrent gastro- intestinal issues. Summary: Controlled trials continue to find that a well- designed and supervised low FODMAP diet improves symptoms by about 5. The average success rate is 6. Many legumes not included on this list (such as kidney beans and split peas) can be made far more digestible and low FODMAP by pre- soaking for 7- 2. Also note that like with anything food related, portion size is fundamental. A serving of almonds are considered low FODMAP, but if you eat an entire bowl of almonds then you will end up eating a high amount of FODMAPs. As with anything we eat, the dose makes the poison. Recent data suggests there is a strong link between the balance of our gut bacteria (called the gut microbiome) and health. An imbalance of this bacterial “community” – known medically as gut dysbiosis – can cause many problems. Additional probiotics in the diet has been shown to improve a range of health aspects from gut health to weight loss. So how does this relate to FODMAPs? It’s thought that fermentation of FODMAPs directly upsets the bacterial balance in our gut. In fact, growing evidence shows that many subgroups of IBS patients have a highly irregular gut bacterial environment (7). The question posed now is will the addition of “good” bacteria – from probiotics – help to manage FODMAP sensitivities? The research is promising, and I’ve written a detailed review and guide here. Essentially from that review it appears that the probiotic supplements VSL#3, Symprove and Align/Alflorex are the most useful. If you predominantly have constipation then look for a probiotic with a mixture of Lactobacilli species. Whole food sources of probiotics include fermented foods like quark, kefir yoghurt and pickled vegetables such as sauerkraut. Particle size matters because the smaller the particles, the easier they are to digest. The easier they are to digest, the faster your blood sugar will rise after you eat them. To make matters more confusing, there are some forms of grain processing that don’t involve grinding at all. Examples include polishing, high- heat treatment, and extrusion puffing. All of these processes damage or remove the bran coating of grains, making the grains faster to cook and the starches inside easier to digest.
